Day # 23 - Oregon Coast

And a windy day it was! Easily the strongest wind we’ve had at the beach! The sand was blowing in sheets across the beach, but what’s a little sand – right? We didn’t want to miss out on the last day so we made the best of it! The kids and daddy were looking forward to flying their kite. It was a little too windy for the one we had, but we decided to put it up anyway. Because it was so windy, we left one of the streamer tails off, but it kept crashing so we put it back on and she really took off! Abby was very excited about the kite and got to take the first turn. She managed to hold on pretty well. Tony was at the ready in case she took off. That actually happened to Tony once at the Outer Banks with one of his big stunt kites. So needless to say we were cautious with the kids. Sarah did very well at the helm. She seemed a natural and was really learning how to fly it instead of just holding the string. AJ of course couldn’t be shown up by his big sisters so he had to have a turn. Tony helped him hold the kite and AJ actually didn’t throw a fit to do it himself! Everyone had fun flying the kite, but when it came time to reel it in the kids were somehow nowhere to be found! (Well, actually they had taken refuge from the sand by the dunes and were looking for buried treasure!) Poor Tony had to reel in all 300 feet of line by himself. The wind was just too strong for me to be able to do it. We tried several times to get the kite to crash to make the job easier, but it just wouldn’t – go figure!

We spent a few last moments saying good bye to the Ocean and then headed back to the camper for lunch and a rest. Since we are pulling out tomorrow and heading for Yosemite, we needed to spend the evening doing chores and starting to break camp. The kids and I headed for the Laundromat to get our sandy clothes washed up and Tony needed to go to the local Starbucks for internet access. One of the downsides to a state park campground was not having Wi-Fi at our site. They did have it available at the visitor’s center which is more than I can say for Ohio state parks. After we got everyone home and things put away, we got the kids to bed. Tomorrow’s journey is a long one, but we have had plenty of R&R here at the beach so hopefully it won’t be too bad. We are sorry to leave the Oregon Coast, but are looking forward to the next leg of our journey.
