Day # 29 (Happy 4th of July!)

Today was a travel day. We left the Yosemite Pines in Groveland CA and went to the KOA in Petaluma, CA. Petaluma is about 20 miles due north of San Francisco and in the heart of Wine Country. The drive over was uneventful even though we had to come back down the mountain that gave me fits 5 days ago. It was much cooler today than it had been going up the truck did fine in 2nd gear the whole way down. Missy did comment after looking at the GPS screen at all the zigs and zags that the screen looked like someone’s intestines it was so curvy. It was pretty funny at the time.

We left a little later than planned because when I reset the alarm late last night I changed the time, but forgot to turn the alarm back on. So at 7:30 Missy nudges me and says “why didn’t the alarm go off at 7:00?”

We made it to the new campground around 2:30 after stopping at “El Pollo Loco” for lunch. I have not had a taste of the crazy chicken since my last visit to Cali over 10 years ago. It hasn’t changed much.

We set camp and then checked out the park. I hate camping on holiday weekends and occasionally I do it anyway and am reminded why I hate it. This park is packed. In addition to every campsite being full, many of the sites have several families camping on them. So a dozen people on every site is common. It means the pool, playground and everything else is over-crowded. Plus when you have this kind of crowd, they tend to be less experienced campers. Many of the common courtesies frequent campers show each other go right out the window on holiday weekends. Since most of these people will be leaving tomorrow morning, I can deal with it for one night. We did go over to the playground and it is very nice, easily the best we have see on this trip.

Around 9:00 we walked to the edge of the campground and up a little rise to watch the fireworks in Petaluma. You could see them okay as we are about 2 miles from the fairgrounds where they shoot them off. It made the kids happy.

Back to the camper and to bed. Tomorrow we are heading into San Francisco so we all need to be well rested.
