Day # 24 - Redding, CA

No matter how you cut it 430 miles is a long way to go towing a camper with 3 little kids. Everyone did pretty well in the morning, but things went downhill in the afternoon. The drive through central Oregon was beautiful and gave us some more time to enjoy the pristine national forest lands there. Once we joined up with Interstate 5 there just wasn’t much to look at for a while. Our beautiful 70 degree weather gave way to 101 degrees as we approached Redding, CA! Yikes! That is just too hot for me!

About the only interesting thing of note was our crossing the “border” into California. Just across the state line, they make all traffic leave the interstate and pass through what looks like a toll booth. When it is your turn they ask you to declare if you are bringing any fresh produce or other plant material into the state with you. Apparently they are not too concerned with other forms of contraband they just want to make sure you’re not smuggling in illegal fruits and veggies! We wondered if we needed to declare the hand full of apples and bananas in our camper! California marches to its own drum, so I guess we shouldn’t be surprised. We did manage to make it to the campground in time to take a quick swim after dinner to cool off and to let the kids work off a little excess energy going “swimmit” as AJ would say. We’re going to try to get a reasonable start to the day tomorrow so we can get to Yosemite and get set up before dark.
