Day # 5 - Rapid City, SD

Damn…I am getting sick of rain. And cold rain to boot. At least today we don’t have to pack-up the camper and go anywhere. Having arrived in the Black Hills of South Dakota last night, we will be here for 3 days. The problem is that everyone we spoke to this morning said that unless the rain and fog breaks, you cannot “see” Mount Rushmore. The fog obscures it. And since the rain is supposed to continue through the weekend, who knows if we will get to see it or not.

So, with everyone tired from the 1300 miles we just covered it is a good day for a “down day”. We all slept in then and made a breakfast of bacon, cheerios and apple slices for the kids. Missy and I had a couple of leftover porkchops that I sliced and made into sandwiches. You might have guessed from our meal selection that we are low on supplies, so it is time to head to the grocery store. A quick check of the GPS found a Super Wal-Mart about 15 miles back up the road in Rapid City. So after breakfast and showers all around, we pilled in the truck and headed for Wally World.

We were a little surprised when we arrived to find the parking lot completely full. I didn’t expect it to be so busy on a rainy Wednesday afternoon. Once inside we quickly discovered that South Dakota dispenses their welfare checks on the 10th of the month and not the 1st like Ohio. I will give you three guesses what today’s date is (and the first 2 don’t count).

After some full contact grocery shopping the kids needed to blow off some more steam. Since Rapid City has a brand new Cabala’s Super Outdoor store we headed over there. The Cabala’s here is much smaller than the one we stop at in Wheeling WV on our way to Washington DC, but it was still plenty big enough to allow Abby and AJ to run off some steam.

Since we have eaten in the camper just about every meal since we left home, we decided it was time for a meal in a restaurant. Abby was still mad that I didn’t make pancakes for breakfast (we had milk and bisquick, but no eggs) so when we found an IHOP a block from Cabala’s we all agreed that “Breakfast for Dinner” was the way to go.

After dinner we headed back to the campground and things got really exciting. Missy put Abby and AJ in bed early and Sarah and I….did laundry. A perfect end to a wet and cold day.
