Day # 8 - Arrive in Cody, WY

This was a long day because it was the most traveling we have had to do in a single day. Around 400 miles total. To make matters worse we had to go over the mountains in central Wyoming. The elevation went from about 1100 feet above sea level to 8600 feet above sea level. And just to make it more interesting…it was raining.

We stopped at a Wal-Mart in Gillette, WY and had lunch in the camper after loading up the fridge with supplies, and then it was on to the 2-lane roads and up and over Horseshoe Mountain. Pulling a camper up a mountain is a drag. Having it push you down the mountain is worse. Stayed in 2nd gear most of the way and crept down at 30 mph. I actually think it was harder on Missy than me since I did all the driving. We long ago agreed that mountain towing was my responsibility.

Once we got off the mountain and had cell phone service again we called our campground to see what time the office was closing. We got told that they tried to call us around 5:00 and when they couldn’t get us to confirm our reservation…they gave our site away. A few panicked phone calls and we were able to get the last site at the Cody KOA campground. We pulled in at 9:45PM (Mountain Standard Time). Dropped the camper and headed to McDonalds for dinner because AJ and Abby were about to mutiny in the back seat. Aahhhh, the joys of traveling with children.
